Andy Burnham MP, Shadow Health Secretary, has made a major speech in Manchester today, demanding that the agenda of privatisation within the NHS is stopped until the public are consulted. This is the latest in Labour’s summer series of speeches under the title The Choice.

Burnham has spelt out the difference between Labour’s approach to the health service and the Government’s current handling. Burnham argues the restructuring of the NHS, which came into force in 2013, led to privatisation by the back door. This includes plans for the biggest outsourcing deal in NHS history which could see cancer care across Staffordshire privatised as part of a £1.2bn contract.

Burnham claims that forced privatisation is entering new territory and becoming harder to reverse. He claims this is happening without a mandate and that the signing of contracts should be halted until the public can have a say – at the ballot box next year.

A government spokesman said Mr Burnham was playing politics and pointed to his record of privatisation while he was Health Secretary in the last Labour government.

Burnham has written to the Simon Stevens, Chief Executive of NHS England, to call for a pause in privatisation unless patient safety or service is at risk.
